I thought it might be useful to take a look at Debian 4r5 and how to install an encrypted directory. More and more people are asking for security and how they can protect themselves. You can buy Debian 4r5 all three DVDs Here for only $9.95 for all three.
Here you have options for installation if you choose F1.
You will be asked to choose Language, Country and Keyboard, all which are easy to figure out. Then you will be asked to supply a hostname, which can be whatever you want and Domain Name which you can leave at default if you are not on a domain.
When you get to the installation on the hard drive select the encrypted directory.
Choose your partition scheme. Here separate partitions are created for more control and easier updating.
Enter your encryption passphrase that should be more than 8 characters…be sure to remember this!!!
Accept your settings and the install process will begin.
You will next be asked to set up users and passwords for the system. Then you will be asked to determine what kind of install you want. It really is a nice feature that you can install Desktop, server apps or even a laptop install. When the install completes you have an encrypted LVM directory….remember the passphrase?
There is no such as Debian 4rc5, it’s Debian 4r5. rc means release candidate, r means release. Debian 4.0 ‘Etch’ was released 1.5 years ago and Debian 4r5 is the 5th point release (update) after the release. Debian 5.0 ‘Lenny’ will be released soon.
