Ulteo…what in the world?

Written by mike from http://beginlinux.com on November 4th, 2008 | 0 Comments

Well I saw this distro released and I know that the guy behind it developed Mandrake Linux (Mandriva) originally.  It is a long story but, I liked Mandrake originally, I was a big fan.  But when the distro became so disorganized, disorientated and discombobulated….well I gave up on the distro and have hated it ever since.  But like I said, this is a short story, when I saw Gaël Duval released this I had to give it a shot.  By the way, Gaël Duval is the guy who was instrumental in Mandrake and was released, fired, whatever…

Back to my story…I wanted to try Ulteo (don’t ask me how to say it..I am clueless).  Here is my impression, I really had no idea what to expect or even what it was.  Here is Ulteo Website

Installation
Fast and simple, yep this is stuff I like.  Basic install of choosing a language, like I knew any others, putting in your username and password, stuff like that…simple.  I start it up and get this!

I must admit, when I saw this I thought….Aliens….this is an alien distro!  I mean what in the world is this.  I was skeptical about what would happen next.

The system boots, I login and get the Desktop.  Here is information for Account Association….no idea what this was about so I joined…got to find out.

I went to the website joined up, not aliens, and now have an account.  So what is the account all about?  Well when you join you can add programs to your Desktop and you also can access an online Desktop.  Yep, this means that you can travel and connect up to your account with any operating system and get access to your files and programs…slick.  Here is a picture of my online account.

So not only do you get a Desktop system that you can update with your online account, you get a mobile system, a system that lets you login anywhere to access your stuff.  It even comes with a sychronizer for your Windows machines, I couldn’t try that as I don’t have Windows : ).    Here is a look at the full featured Desktop using KDE and built off Kbuntu.

I found that Ulteo is really worth a try, in fact I will use it for awhile and do another follow up article on this slick distro …just don;t ask me how to say it.
